Smoky eyes can take a seat, because this winter, mattes have been benched and ‘90s frosted eyeshadow is everywhere. The throwback trend has been emerging for a while after celeb fans like Hailey Bieber and Doja Cat dusted it down and gave it a modern makeover, but it couldn’t be more perfect for winter, if you're looking to add a little icy sparkle to your makeup.

For millennium babies who missed the OG hype, frosted eyeshadow centres around cool-toned shades like lavender, lilac, icy blue, mint, silver and pale pink in frosty metallic finishes. Stars like Christina Aguilera, Britney and Brandi helped put the trend on the map in the 1990s and – after a thirty year hiatus – it's about to be just as big again.

It makes sense that our obsession with all things glowy has spread to our eyelids. Ethereal, radiant skin is set to headline for 2024, and frosted eyeshadow pairs perfectly. It plays into the cold girl look that's doing a second round this winter, too, with flushed skin and frosty lids that look like you've just headed off the slopes. And cultural moments like Euphoria are continuing to impact our makeup, with season 3 confirmed. The show has given us plenty of references for layering pastel glitz and sparkle across eyelids.

As trends go, this one is an easy one to love. It's playful, it's cute and it offers up more wearable ways to make our makeup a little more individual and interesting. As for how to keep it modern, the key is to mix textures to make it feel fresh. A dewy base looks beautiful alongside frosty metallics on lids. Or, pair it with glossy lips and soft-matte skin. Finish by loading up lashes with lots of mascara to maintain definition and keep them looking full.

Here's some of our favourite ways to wear nineties frosted eyeshadow…
