Cherry cola

For another year running, red and copper has secured its place amongst the top hair colour trends, but it will continue to evolve heading through 2024, bringing a little extra fire. “As predicted, the progression of the copper hair trend is to move into the red tones and we’re seeing strong evidence of this already,” notes top hair stylist and trend forecaster, Tom Smith. “This will branch off into various trends across 2024 with golden toned copper-reds being most popular, but certainly violet-toned cherry reds will also take the spotlight,” he adds.

“Red hair is still going to be super popular in 2024, but bolder. Think more red, more vibrant tones – a cherry, plum vibe,” concurs Harriet Muldoon, colour specialist at Larry King salon. And Jay has called out “race car red” as the one to watch. “Dua Lipa incorporated this 'race car red' perfectly,” he says.

“The reds are here to stay,” agrees Louis Driver, senior stylist at Bleach London. “Particularly for curly hair,” he adds. “Whether vivid or muted, red adds a fun, bold and dynamic look to curly hair, enhancing the texture, shine and volume. For the non committal types there are lots of semi permanent reds available you can play around with,” Louis says. Specifically, he predicts orange-toned reds will rule. “Apricot red is a variation of copper red. It’s particularly striking with a natural element and is a show-stopper for curly hair types,” he says. Meanwhile, Jay is also backing peachy copper, “seen on the likes of Amelia Dimoldenburg and Meredith Duxbury; there are warm pink undertones through their copper-red hair,” he says.

Glossy brunette

When it comes to brunettes, dimension and condition are more important than the shade itself. “2024 is going to hero all the forgotten brunette shades. We saw all the shades of chocolate and mahogany flood the runways towards the end of 2023 and the glossiness of coffee-coloured leather has given way to some major inspiration in hair and beauty too,” says Tom. “This year, we’ll see an exploration of all the nuances of brown tones, from muted taupe to true dark chocolate, right up into intense chocolate cherry tones – all with high gloss,” he adds.

In general though we’ll see brunettes become glossier, warmer and darker in monochromatic shades or with added soft dimension. “I think people are steering towards more warmer and deeper tones of brunette,” says Jay. “It’s easier to maintain and matches the makeup trends we’ve been seeing (such as latte makeup).” Hot chocolate brown will be popular, he says.

“The quiet luxury trend is still making its way into everyday life, with clients requesting ‘expensive hair’ and high-shine brunettes,” notes Sarah, who recommends incorporating “rich chocolate tones with subtle caramel highlights for added depth.” Luci Green, hair colour specialist at Larry King agrees, noting “ultra shine, super healthy, warm brunettes,” will rule. “Clients are wanting to warm up their skin with rich warm tones running through their glossy, expensive, liquid brunette,” she says. Besides shine, Louis says “the depth and richness of brunette shades” will make them look expensive.

Weekend flirt

Fancy something a little more offbeat? Sarah recommends having a weekend flirt with colour using semi permanent glosses. “Cool-girl colours are all about making a statement and expressing your personality,” she says. As for the shades to have on your radar, "'galactic grey' will make its landing in 2024,” she says. Describing the tone as “a futuristic take on classic grey, infused with holographic undertones, it’s best for cooler skin tones,” she says. Elsewhere "sunset sorbet" blends warm peach, coral, and pink “ to really give you a playful and vibe,” she says. “Josh Wood’s Rose Quartz Glaze is a favourite,” she adds.

Linen blonde

For a fresh shade of blonde, ‘linen blonde’ is already becoming popular with celebrities taking inspiration from their own interiors,” says Sarah. It's about elevating the classics with a touch of contemporary flair,” she says. The trend incorporates a light blonde with cool beige, taupe and neutral tones.

Biscuit brunette

Not sure whether to go blonde, brunette or copper? Biscuit brunette is a beautiful blend of all three says Larry King hair colourist, Amy Fish. “It works perfectly on hair that's naturally dark if you want to try and go lighter without jeopardising the condition,” she says. And it looks beautiful across all textures. “A multi-dimensional look that plays with high and low lights will add interest to curly hair,” says Louis.
