As the Princess of Wales turns 42, take a look back at her best fashion moments since joining the Royal Family

Nope, we can't believe how much time has passed since we were put out of our wedding dress anticipation misery and wiped away a tear as Kate Middleton entered Westminster Abbey an Alexander McQueen-clad bride, either. The now Princess of Wales was 29 when she walked down the aisle to marry Prince William (though of course, she'd been in the public eye for much longer) – and her style has been evolving ever since.
While her wedding look was undoubtedly one of her most memorable yet, what we love most about Kate's sartorial prowess is how she's truly mastered the art of high-low dressing, fusing the best of the British high street with high-end designs fresh from the catwalk.
Case in point? The £120 sweater vest by Cefinn that she wore recently as she visited the Vsi Razom Community Hub for a royal engagement.
Swapping out her usual midi dresses for a trouser look, she expertly layered the fashion editor-favourite atop a crisp white shirt.
Unsurprisingly, this exact colour-way sold out almost immediately. Luckily for those who are less impulsive about our buys, there is a longer iteration in the same shade as well as many other colours of this exact style.

In news that may not surprise you, Kate was officially crowned the nation's number one royal fashion icon in recent research conducted by the Fashion Retail Academy.
As Lee Lucas, principal and CEO of the Fashion Retail Academy pointed out: "Ever since newspapers became widely available in the UK, the royal family has influenced people's style, and nowadays with the internet and social media at their disposal, it’s even easier for people to mimic their outfit choices."
"In addition to well-known designers, Kate has been seen wearing high street names such as Zara, Topshop and Marks & Spencer, which immediately makes her more relatable to the British public and her fashion choices more accessible."

Kate stepped out wearing this chic green dress from Beulah London, a label she's championed ever since she joined the royal family. It's great to see Kate supporting a brand like Beulah, who donate a percentage of their profits to support victims of sex trafficking. According to the website, 10 percent of all profits are donated to The Beulah Trust, which was set up to "to give grants that pay for skill courses giving women who have been victims of sex trafficking and abuse the chance to find work, generate an income, and live a self-sufficient life, free from abuse". The Occasion: Sportsaid 2013, London.
The Outfit: A monochrome Alice Temperley dress, Jimmy Choo heels and a red Alexander McQueen clutch bag
The Buzz: This cocktail dress didn’t just get the thumbs-up from everyone in the GLAMOUR office, it sold out online, minutes after Kate Middleton was snapped out and about in it. - Rex

The Outfit: A navy blue silk tulle gown with a black velvet belt from Jenny Packham's Autumn Winter 2013 Collection.
The Buzz: After her elegant all-white Christening attire, this off-the-shoulder creation from Jenny Packham showed the Duchess is back to her eveningwear best. We love the ink blue hue. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Prince George's Christening
The Outfit: An Alexander McQueen dress and Jane Taylor hat
The Buzz: Kate chose the same designer as her wedding gown - and whilst we loved the all-white look, it was Prince George's attire - a replica of the original royal christening gown made by the Queen's couturier Angela Kelly - that created the most buzz. - Rex Features
The Occasion: Visiting a SportsAid workshop
The Outfit: A Smythe navy blazer, a Ralph Lauren Breton sweater, J Brand jeans and Stuart Weitzman for Russell and Bromley Corkswoon wedges
The Buzz: Giant cork wedges probably aren't the most obvious choice for a dabble on the volleyball court, but hey - Kate does off-duty denim in style by pairing a Breton sweater and jeans with a nipped-in navy jacket.

The Occasion: Trooping The Colour
The Outfit: A pale pink coat dress by Alexander McQueen worn with a matching hat by Jane Corbett
The Buzz: Was Kate hinting at baby Wales’ gender in this pretty pink number? Oh, the speculation it caused. Her prim coat featured an oversized Peter Pan collar and pearl buttons, but it was her lovely hat that added an extra feminine touch. - Rex Features
The Occasion: Naming the Royal Princess Cruise Ship
The Outfit: A leopard print coat dress by Hobbs
The Buzz: Her last solo outing before she had Prince George, Kate looked radiant in this animal print ensemble.

The Occasion: St Patrick’s Day 2013 Parade
The Outfit: An Emerald green, Emilia Wickstead coat decorated with a shamrock brooch, a black John Locke hat, and black courts, gloves, tights and a poloneck.
The Buzz: Aside from the fact Kate’s green coat was recycled (worn at the same parade last year), it was the Duchess’s shoe getting stuck in a grate that got the most press attention – luckily her husband was there to help her up gracefully.

The Occasion: Private view of her National Portrait Gallery painting.
The Outfit: A maroon, belted Whistles dress

The Occasion: Presenting duties at the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year 2012 Awards
The Outfit: A long, moss-green Alexander McQueen dress

The Occasion: A visit to her alma mater, St Andrew's school in Berkshire
The Outfit: A tartan skirt suit by Alexander McQueen and high-heeled suede boots
The Buzz: Kate playing hockey is no biggie. But in a suit? And heels? Impressive stuff - and all the more shocking, it turned out, when, just days later, her pregnancy with Prince George was hurriedly announced as she was hospitalised with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness.

The Occasion: The launch of the new Treasures gallery at the Natural History Museum in London.
The Outfit: Mulberry's £1,400 'cabbage' dress.
The Buzz: With her new Farrah Fawcett-style 'do and her demure, 70s-inspired dress, critics had a field day with this Kate look - one of the most fashion-forward statements we'd seen her make since the Royal Wedding. Of course, that's not why it will be remembered... The Duchess was, in fact, in the early stages of pregnancy here. - Rex Features
The Occasion: A fundraising event at her former university, St Andrews
The Outfit: A lace overlay gown by Temperley London, accessorised with a red bow clutch and gemstone-embellished poppy
The Buzz: The eagle-eyed among you won't need us to tell you that this is another high profile wardrobe repeat. Kate originally trod the red carpet in this Temperley gown at the rainy royal premiere of Spielberg's War Horse in January 2012. A quick dry and clean later, it looks as good as new, no? - Getty Images
The Occasion: The official launch of the National Football Centre in Burton-on-Trent
The Outfit: A forest green Emilia Wickstead dress coat, belted, with long suede boots
The Buzz: Having kept a low profile while that topless photos row rumbled on, we weren't in the slightest surprised to see Kate step out in this conservative Emilia Wickstead coat - which had, of course, drawn much admiration on its first outing, at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Aldershot. Looks like Lamps was impressed, too. - PA
The Occasion: Stepping out on another date on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Diamond Jubilee Tour, this time for an official state dinner at the Malaysian National Palace
The Outfit: A white empire line gown, with gold appliqué and embroidery. The finishing touches? A coordinating gold clutch, gold earrings and gold bangle
The Buzz: While we think the colour choice (or lack of it!) isn’t the most flattering on English rose Kate, we love the traditional detailing of the dress – and the way her touches of gold help William’s royal blue suit really pop.

The Occasion: Continuing her Royal tour of Singapore with Wills
The Outfit: A beautiful retro tea dress in egg shell blue, paired with a traditional Eastern parasol
The Buzz: The delicate embroidery, the pleated skirt, the whimsical parasol: this is an outfit made in Great Gatsby heaven! A thumbs up for the Duchess from us. - Rex Features
The Occasion: A tour of the Rolls Royce plant in Seletar during day two of the royal tour of Singapore
The Outfit: A cool and classic broiderie anglaise skirt suit by Alexander McQueen, paired with a Russell and Bromley clutch bag and Corkswoon wedges by Stuart Weizman for Russell and Bromley
The Buzz: With the newswires clanging about how Kate opted for water over wine at dinner the night before (shock!), the Duchess wasn’t giving anything away in this fitted white skirt suit by fave label, Alexander McQueen. Its light fabric was a smart choice in the humid conditions, and she later briefly accessorised it with a pair of goggles as she took a tour around the factory. - Rex Features
The Occasion: A welcoming ceremony prior to a state dinner during the royal tour of Singapore
The Outfit: A wool and silk-blend shift dress from Prabal Gurung’s spring/summer 2012 collection
The Buzz: Wow. Is this Kate’s most fashion forward look ever? It’s certainly a contender – and we like it. A lot. It also happens to be another politically brilliant choice: Prabal Gurung is a Singapore-born designer in the New York stable and, with NY Fashion Week in full swing, it was a nod of support for the industry from afar.

The Occasion: A visit to Singapore’s Botanical Gardens on the first day of the royal tour of Singapore
The Outfit: A pale pink, flower-embroidered dress by Jenny Packham
The Buzz: Kate stunned onlookers were stunned by her rather literal interpretation of Eastern style when she stepped off the plane in Changi airport in this kimono-shaped dress. As ever, however, its aptness can’t be downplayed: the royal couple were whisked straight off to a ceremony in Singapore’s Botanical Gardens for the unveiling of an orchid, named ‘Vanda William Catherine’ in their honour. - REX
The Occasion: Opening the Road to 2012: Aiming High exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery
The Outfit: A blue silk shift dress from Stella McCartney’s pre-fall 2012 collection with a £49,000 Cartier necklace featuring five-ring detail
The Buzz: Turning out for a London 2012 celebration, it had to be either red, white or blue, didn’t it? Kate, as ever, didn’t disappoint in a brand new, £515 Stella McCartney dress – a doubly apt choice, considering that Stella also created the kit in which our athletes will compete. The finishing touch? A Cartier necklace, worth a reported £49,000, featuring five rings. Go, Team GB! - Getty Images
The Occasion: A ceremony that sees Prince William installed into the historic Order of the Thistle, in Edinburgh.
The Outfit: A lemon dress coat by Emilia Wickstead, plus a previously-worn Philip Treacy hat and a tartan clutch.
The Buzz: Since it was been revealed that Prince Charles paid £35,000 towards his daughter-in-law's wardrobe since her marriage, Kate went big on recycling (not that she was ever shy of it before). Both this tartan clutch and the Philip Treacy hat are old wardrobe favourites, although the lemon dress coat is to be a fresh, new investment piece by Kate's go-to designer friend Emilia Wickstead.[/b] - PA Photos
The Occasion: A special service to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at St Paul’s Cathedral
The Outfit: An Alexander McQueen cream lace pencil dress and a hat by young British designer Jane Taylor
The Buzz: The Diamond Jubilee celebrations were Kate’s biggest royal gig to date, her wedding aside. So it was little surprise to many commentators that she turned to Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen – who did such a wonderful job of ensuring that the latter went off without a fashion faux pas in sight – to ensure that she looked stylish, yet chic, for the celebrations. This custom-made cream lace dress earned her a universal thumbs up.

The Occasion: The Diamond Jubilee flotilla
The Outfit: A customised red dress by Alexander McQueen, plus LK Bennett Sledge pumps and a hat by Sylvia Fletcher

The Occasion: The Diamond Jubilee garden party at Buckingham palace
The Outfit: A £1,200 baby pink day dress by Emilia Wickstead, plus LK Bennett pumps and a lace trimmed hat by Jane Corbitt
The Buzz: We all know that Kate isn't one to hold back on wearing her favourite pieces time and again, but she surpassed herself with this one; she'd previously worn the same Emilia Wickstead dress - albeit sans hat and with pink, rather than nude, pumps - less than two weeks before, to the Royal Sovereign's lunch in honour of the Queen's Jubilee at Windsor Castle. - Rex Features
The Occasion: The BOA Olympic Concert at London's Royal Albert Hall
The Outfit: A teal Jenny Packham dress with lace back – shown off beautifully thanks to a rare royal up-do – and Jimmy Choo sandals
The Buzz: Jenny Packham never fails Kate when it’s time to pack a punch, and the designer even created a one off clutch bag to go with this dress, just for the Duchess. The design itself was customised from one of the designer’s bridal creations. Beautiful. - Rex Features
The Occasion: A black tie dinner at The Thirty Club, Claridge’s
The Outfit: Roland Mouret’s Lombard gown, plus £450 Jimmy Choo sandals
The Buzz: The press dubbed this Kate’s ‘Angelina moment’. But, as avid Kate watchers will already know, Kate and Ange’s taste in clothes isn’t really as different as one might initially think...

The Outfit: A fitted grey £450 Amanda Wakeley dress, Jimmy Choo heels, an Alexander McQueen belt, Anya Hindmarch's Maud clutch and Temple of Heaven 9ct gold Girandole earrings by Cassandra Goad, priced at a cool £1,200
The Buzz: You'd be forgiven if you thought you'd spotted Kate wearing this Wakeley shift before. She has, indeed, worn it previously (albeit in oatmeal, rather than grey, and beltless) - for the visit the royal couple paid to the Royal Marsden hospital in September 2011. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A reception to celebrate the Scott-Amundsen Centenary Race to the South Pole
The Outfit: A blue two-piece tweed skirt suit by Rebecca Taylor
The Buzz: The morning after the royal premiere night before, an unfazed Kate was en pointe in this lady-like tweed suit by New Zealand-born, NY-based designer Rebecca Taylor. Think it looks familiar? Us too – it’s not at all unlike the M Missoni outfit that Kate wore for a visit to Fortnum & Mason with the Queen and Camilla the year before. Blue tweed, apparently, has the royal seal of approval! - Rex Features
The Occasion: The premiere of African Cats in London
The Outfit: A grey dress from Matthew Williamson’s pre-autumn/winter 2012 collection with Kiki McDonough earrings and a clutch bag from Emmy Shoes
The Buzz: Déjà vu? As the Duchess of Cambridge attended her second royal premiere a couple of days ahead of her first wedding anniversary, her husband was yet again by her side – and toting an umbrella. The duo attended the premiere of the Disney documentary on behalf of the Tusk Trust for which, royal watchers will know, they also hosted an event as in Hollywood, as its patrons, the year before. Kate made her first foray into the rails of hot Brit designer Matthew Williamson for the occasion, coming up trumps with this on-trend, peplum-waisted dress with embellishment that nodded to the African theme. Gorgeous! - Rex Features
The Occasion: The St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks in Aldershot.
The Outfit: An Emilia Wickstead dress coat – green, naturally – accessorised with a hat by Lock & Co and a gold shamrock brooch that has been handed down through the Royal family and was once worn by the Queen Mother.
The Buzz: For once, the focus was less on the Duchess’ fashion choice – which was universally deemed pitch-perfect – and more on the success of this, her first solo military engagement, in which she presented shamrocks to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards at their St Patrick's Day Parade. Among the recipients was six-year-old Irish Wolfhound Conmeal, the regimental mascot, who reportedly shook his collar in thanks. Ahh.

The Occasion: Her first public address, at The Treehouse children's hospice in Ipswich
The Outfit: A belted, electric blue button-through dress from Reiss, costing £139
The Buzz: Style critics went into a frenzy when they spotted the Duchess in this little number – and not just because it was yet another gem from the Great British high street. No, rather, it was because Kate had lent the dress to her mum, Carole, for Ascot in 2010, where she’d been snapped having a jolly time in it. Cue tabloid style wars galore (and, to give her her due, Carole didn’t fare too badly at all). - Rex Features
The Occasion: A visit to the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts in Dulwich with Prince Charles
The Outfit: An appliqué-detail grey day dress from Orla Kiely’s autumn/winter 2011 collection and black Episode heels
The Buzz: Kate wore this understated dress as she joined her father-in-law for their first joint engagement – doing some crafts with children at the Dulwich picture gallery in South London. The duo were happy to each pick up an iron to finish the silk designs they’d made with the children and, asked later if it was a first for Charles, Camilla reportedly said: "I've got him well-trained with an iron." - PA Photos
The Occasion: A visit to the British hockey team at the Olympic Park, where she partook in an impromptu match, in her role as ambassador for Team GB at the 2012 Olympics
The Outfit: Coral jeans by J Brand paired with an official 2012 hoodie and trainers
The Buzz: It wasn’t just a hockey goal that Kate scored – she notched up another style win, too, in these on-trend coral jeans. This is as close to off-duty style we’ll probably see from the Duchess, and we were impressed. (And we weren’t the only ones: George At Asda reported sales of coloured jeans shooting up 88% after this picture emerged.) - Wenn
The Occasion: Accompanying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on a trip to Leicester’s De Montfort University to mark the beginning of the Diamond Jubilee Tour
The Outfit: LK Bennett’s £395 Jude jacket and the £225 matching Davina dress with a pillbox hat by James Lock and those favourite Episode heels
The Buzz: Kate picked up this 40s-style two-piece in the legendary ‘fashion dash’ she embarked upon ahead of her first Christmas at Sandringham, and this was its first public outing. At the time, the jacket was featured on LK Bennett’s website at half price in the sale; needless to say, stocks didn’t last long.

The Occasion: An appearance at Fortnum & Mason as part of the Gifts For Troops scheme
The Outfit: A long blue dress coat by M Missoni and Rupert Sanderson’s Malone heels
The Buzz: This was Kate’s first official outing with her step-mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law, but if she was nervous, you wouldn’t have known it. The trio dressed in coordinating shades of blue in the picture-perfect show of harmony – although Kate showed her individuality by wearing two daffodils on her lapel in honour of St David’s Day, while the Queen and Camilla instead opted for leek brooches. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A visit to Rose Hill Primary School in Oxford
The Outfit: A printed brown coat-dress by Orla Kiely with brown suede Aquatalia by Marvin K booties
The Buzz: This dress was a new one on Kate, and this airing ensured that pretty much every piece that incorporated this distinctive Birdie jacquard fabric disappeared from OrlaKiely.com in a flash. The boots, however, were a recycle – last spotted before Kate became Mrs Windsor, when she and Wills christened a new lifeboat at Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station at Anglesey in February 2011. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Valentine’s Day charity visits in Liverpool
The Outfit: Hobbs’ £369 Celeste coat in chestnut brown and an Oasis dress, plus Kiki McDonagh earrings, believed to have been a Christmas gift from her husband
The Buzz: It may have been Kate’s first Valentine’s Day as a married woman, but with Prince William on duty in the Falkland Islands, she wrapped up against the northern chill in this Hobbs coat – which she’d reportedly picked up in September 2011, and put aside for the pre-planned trip – and a smart black jersey dress from Oasis that’s been in her wardrobe for a while as she got down to her own business. While in the city, she visited The Brink, an alcohol-free bar, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. - PA Photos
The Occasion: The opening of the Lucien Freud Portraits exhibition
The Outfit: A grey coat-dress by high street label Jesire with Jimmy Choo heels and an Asprey Button Pendant
The Buzz: In the race to place what Kate’s wearing, this one had style commentators scratching their heads. Turns out, the coat-dress was by Jesire – a British high steet label that disappeared from said street circa March 2011. Whether she’s kept it ‘on file’ since then or picked it up at a special sale afterwards remains a mystery... Her fan club had to content themselves lusting after her Jimmy Choos and Asprey pendant. Or seeing the Lucien Freud exhibition (we hear that Kate is a big fan of his work).

The Occasion: The Royal Premiere of Steven Spielberg’s War Horse
The Outfit: A floor-length, lace-overlay dress by Temperley London
The Buzz: For her first royal film premiere, Kate didn’t disappoint, opting to wear this decidedly regal lace gown from her go-to label for eveningwear, Temperley London. Her gallant husband ensured it stayed pristine in the rain by shielding her with an umbrella as they made their way down the red carpet – but apparently, that wasn’t the waterproofing required. On BBC Breakfast the following day, Spielberg, revealed: “I was sitting next to her and all I know is at one point my wife, who was sitting to my right, right in front of my face she passed a Kleenex... I saw the Kleenex go across my face, arrive and stop but I didn't want to intrude on her experience watching War Horse so I never glanced over. According to my peripheral vision, her eyes were dabbed.” - Rex Features
The Occasion: Attending a church service with the royal family on Christmas morning
The Outfit: An unidentified maroon coat with a matching hat created by milliner Jane Corbett, plus a pair of amethyst 18-carat gold drop earrings by Kiki McDonough, worth £1,900, which were thought to be a present from Prince William
The Buzz: Kate kicked off her inaugural Christmas day at Sandringham in head-to-toe maroon – a festive yet sober choice. A record 3,000 well-wishers turned out to St Mary Magdalene church on the Norfolk estate to see the royal family, and police were on hand to manage the crowds. “It reminded me of the Diana years – when she introduced Prince William to the crowds when he was about seven or eight. It was touching,” Alison Croose, from King’s Lynn, told a reporter for the Mail Online. “Diana used to have her hand on his back. Now you see William with his hand on Kate’s back. It was really nice.” Notably absent was Prince Philip, who spent the day recuperating in hospital having been admitted with chest pains. - REX Features
The Occasion: Supporting Prince William at a Christmas Eve football match
The Outfit: A Temperley London cream knit and an LK Bennett fur-trimmed jacket, plus Le Chameau boots and an unidentified trilby hat
The Buzz: Kate’s first Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham was always going to be a big fashion deal, and the industry delighted in the news that Kate would change outfits no less than five times during the festivities. But it wasn’t all tinsel and lipstick, as she pulled on this outdoorsy outfit – one albeit comprised of pieces from her go-to labels – to hang out with Harry on the sidelines of her husband’s football match. Nice to know ‘football widow syndrome’ affects even the royals. - Rex Features
The Occasion: A visit to Centrepoint homeless charity with Prince William, who is its patron
The Outfit: A £350 Ralph Lauren roll-neck sweater dress and her favourite long black suede Aquatalia boots
The Buzz: What a way to scotch rumours of a royal pregnancy! The Duchess displayed a distinctly flat tummy in this box fresh sweater dress by Ralph Lauren – belted for good measure – for a low-key London charity visit, where she and Wills baked mince pies and gingerbread men with the capital’s homeless.

The Occasion: The Sun Military Awards 2011
The Outfit: A strapless, custom-made Alexander McQueen velvet fishtail gown
The Buzz: It was a family affair as a McQueen-wearing Kate and her black-tie-clad husband walked the red carpet with her brother-in-law Harry in support of Britain’s servicemen and women – among whom both men count themselves. While all eyes were on Kate, all ears were on Harry, who made a moving address: "I am a young Army officer, a serving soldier. Like my brother, I share many of the same hopes, the same aspirations to go on operations, and the same fears as all those who serve our Queen and country... By an accident of birth, though, it falls to 564673 Captain Wales humbly to express – on behalf of my comrades-in-arms and people up and down the country – the admiration we feel for the extraordinary men and women we honour here tonight." - PA Photos
The Occasion: The Prince’s Trust Concert at the Royal Albert Hall
The Outfit: A £69.99 Zara printed dress and the black Ralph Lauren jacket she wore the day after her wedding
The Buzz: Zara has much to thank Kate Middleton for. This printed day dress could’ve been an odd choice for an evening occasion, but the Duchess styled it up with aplomb. (Or perhaps our memory of it is just coloured by the fact that Amy Childs was spotted in the same design just a couple of days later...) - PA Photos
The Occasion: The National Memorial Arboretum Appeal dinner
The Outfit: A £1,000+ Grecian gown by Jenny Packham
The Buzz: A dress fit for a princess? Without question. Kate was the epitome of regal glamour in this liquid, asymmetric Jenny Packham gown as she stood by her husband’s side at this fundraising dinner at St James’ Palace, poppy in place. Quelle shock, then, when it emerged that screen siren Angelina Jolie had worn the same design some months before – albeit the much vampier red version. - PA Photos

The Outfit: A Diane von Furstenberg coat and a hat by milliner Jane Corbett
The Buzz: A quiet, sombre outfit for a quiet, sombre occasion – Kate’s first on the Foreign and Commonwealth balcony above the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

The Occasion: Her first joint humanitarian mission with Prince William, in Copenhagen
The Outfit: A belted red coat by LK Bennett with brown suede Aquatalia boots
The Buzz: Kate and Wills joined the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark for a tour of the Unicef famine relief depot in the Danish capital – with a happy, young, royal couple squared providing much excitement for the local paparazzi. It was Kate’s refusal to try a special high-protein peanut paste which is sent to malnourished children in East Africa, however, which dominated the headlines back in Blighty... - Getty Images
The Occasion: Opening the new cancer ward at the Royal Marsden Hospital with Prince William
The Outfit: A £450 Amanda Wakeley oatmeal felt dress with three-quarter length sleeves with her favourite £195 Sledge 2 LK Bennett nude heels
The Buzz: Prince William, who is president of the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey, almost had to miss this appointment when he was called out for an emergency search and rescue during the previous night. While he looked weary, Kate, however, was resplendent in a high-maintenance cream dress and impressed everyone with whom she spoke, from staff to patients alike. The visit came almost exactly 30 years after Princess Diana toured the Royal Marsden on her first solo engagement, in 1982. - Rex Features
The Occasion: Visiting victims of the summer 2011 riots in Birmingham
The Outfit: Head-to-knee Alexander McQueen pre-Autumn 2011, plus blue suede Prada pumps
The Buzz: This one was a bit of a blow-out look for Kate – not only in terms of its aesthetic showiness, but for the price tag, too. The silk blouse alone would have set you back a cool £795. Little wonder that, while this was lauded as a style triumph, it didn’t have the instant sell-out factor that the Duchess’ day looks usually do. But we can dream. - PA Photos
The Occasion: The wedding of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall
The Outfit: A cream embroidered Day Birger et Mikkelsen brocade coat with a one-off hat by British milliner Gina Foster and LK Bennett’s Natalie straw clutch
The Buzz: For a royal wedding at which Kate wasn’t the focus, she played this well – opting for an ever-dependable dress coat (and one she’d worn before, no less, at the wedding of Laura Parker Bowles in 2006), with some statement headgear. Simple, elegant... Job done.

The Occasion: Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall’s pre-wedding party
The Outfit: A green silk dress by Diane Von Furstenberg
The Buzz: For many people, a party – particularly one attached to a wedding – is the perfect excuse to buy a new dress. Not our Kate! Instead, she recycled this beautiful, emerald-green silk number, which she also wore during the royal tour of Canada. A bold move, as it’s such a distinctive piece, but she is just radiant in it. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A dinner celebrating BAFTA in Hollywood
The Outfit: A lilac Alexander McQueen gown with an embroidered sash, a Jimmy Choo Ubai Clutch and Jimmy Choo Vamp Glitter heels
The Buzz: The culmination of the royal tour of Canada and the US, this event saw the Duchess and Prince William rub shoulders with Hollywood heavyweights including Jack Black, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez. How does one ensure one is the best dressed in such a room? McQueen gown aside, we imagine that Kate’s beautiful drop diamond earrings helped – they were on loan from the Queen. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Cheering on Prince William in a polo match in Santa Barbara
The Outfit: A de Gournay silver and marble grey hand-painted chinoiserie silk dress by Jenny Packham (deep breath!), and LK Bennett’s Sliver sandal
The Buzz: Such is Kate's love of Jenny Packham that she opted to wear a dress by the designer on the day of the BAFTA gala, too, as she watched her husband participate in a game of polo. Kate handed out trophies to the winning team which, fortuitously, included William - and the crowd melted as she gave him a congratulatory kiss. - PA Photos
The Occasion: The launch of the Tusk Trust U.S. Patron's Circle in Santa Barbara
The Outfit: A navy and white crochet top and a white pleat skirt, both by Whistles
The Buzz: A radiant Kate was pictured chatting happily to Reese Witherspoon at this event – and a few months later, the actress recalled on Ellen how daunted she felt prior to their meeting. "Somebody called me and said, 'We're having a really small fundraiser would you want to come over and meet the prince and princess?'" she began to explain. "I was like, 'Yes!' My husband just thought I was so dorky. He was like, 'Why are you so excited?' I must have tried on like six outfits. 'I'm meeting a princess. You don't understand. You have to be wearing the right outfit and the whole thing. I don't know, maybe we can be friends.' So we went and it's always funny. Whenever I am super excited about things, my husband calls it the double barrel. That's when I smile so big I look like a child."

The Occasion: Arriving in Santa Barbara
The Outfit: A lavender Roksanda Illincic shift dress and her favourite LK Bennett Natalie clutch
The Buzz: This dress caused confusion among style critics, who originally had it pegged as a Peridot creation. It is, in fact, by London-based designer Roksanda Illinic – a particular favourite of First Lady Michelle Obama. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A visit to Calgary Zoo's ENMAX Conservatory during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Catherine Walker’s red satin and wool Marianne coatdress by Catherine Walker, plus those LK Bennett pumps and a maple leaf brooch borrowed from the Queen
The Buzz: Another day, another occasion to wear some bling borrowed from the royal jewellery box. Everything about this outfit is an overtly political choice; the red nods to the Canadian maple leaf, while choosing Catherine Walker, a designer often associated with Diana, Princess of Wales, will have been no accident. Kate tends to favour pastels, but this proves that she can carry off bold hues just as well. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Attending day two of the Calgary Stampede during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: An embroidered Alice by Temperley blouse and a traditional white cowboy hat
The Buzz: The royal couple thrilled locals as they donned ten gallon hats and cowboy-inspired outfits (albeit a designer version in Kate’s case) – and, as if that wasn’t enough, Prince William also wowed ‘em with a speech. "A week ago in Ottawa I spoke of how much Catherine and I looked forward to getting to know Canada and Canadians. I can only say that the experience of this past seven days has exceeded all our expectations," he told the crowd. "We have been hugely struck by the diversity of this beautiful country: from Ottawa to Quebec; from Prince Edward Island to the Northwest Territories; and now the excitement of Calgary – and what about these fantastic white hats?" What a charmer. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Attending day one of the Calgary Stampede during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A similar white Temperley blouse and the same white cowboy hat
The Buzz: What can we say? Kate clearly knew this outfit was a winner, since she wore pretty much the same thing the next day. And we concur.

The Occasion: Arriving in Calgary on the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A yellow silk dress by Jenny Packham with nude LK Bennett pumps
The Buzz: It’s not often that we see Kate in floaty, shorter silhouettes – and we don’t blame her for being put off them after experiencing her very own Marilyn Monroe moment as she landed in a very windy Calgary in this one. She smiled on through regardless. What a pro! - PA Photos
The Occasion: An unscheduled visit to Slave Lake in northern Alberta during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Twill trousers by J Brand, a Smythe blazer, Linda Camm belt and Pied A Terre wedge slingbacks
The Buzz: This outfit is the perfect sum of parts that Kate wore elsewhere during the nine-day royal tour. Interestingly, the newly-weds were scheduled to have a break from their travels on this date but they opted instead to pay a visit to Slave Lake, a town reduced to ashes by a devastating wildfire instead, to meet surviving families. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Heading out to Eagle Island during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Her favourite J Brand 811 skinny jeans, a khaki Burberry shirt and Sebago Bela shoes
The Buzz: Kate eschewed typical date looks and instead pulled on her favourite jeans and a low-key top to helicopter off into the Canadian wilderness for some much-needed alone time with her new husband, where the two cookined steaks over an open fire and watched the sunset. Aah. - Rex Features
The Occasion: Celebrating Independence Day during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A knitted, nautical-inspired day dress by Alexander McQueen with navy Prada pumps
The Buzz: We always knew that there’d come a point where the world’s two biggest McQueen fans overlapped, and this dress was it. Kate wore it in cream, but Sarah Jessica Parker wore it first – in its navy incarnation, to see her husband Matthew Broderick awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame all the way back in January 2006.

The Occasion: Arriving in Summerside during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A £300 navy Ted Baker trench coat
The Buzz: Kate’s had this navy trench coat in her fashion armoury since at least 2006, proving that classics are worth the investment. Ted Baker was pretty pleased with her purchase also, announcing that UK and European sales were up 8.7% and global sales by almost 15% since the Duchess had been seen to be championing the brand. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A visit to Yellowknife in Ottowa during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Malene Birger’s Bullet dress paired with those trusty LK Bennett Sledge2 pumps
The Buzz: The Duchess didn’t let the light colour of this dress (or those heels) put her off a little tree planting, but she did decline a game of street hockey, settling instead to accept an honorary jersey. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A visit to the Canadian War Musuem in Ottowa during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A structured grey pencil dress by Catherine Walker, Tabitha Simmons’s Dela pumps, a Hobbs bag and Links Of London’s Hope Egg earrings
The Buzz: Kate’s not only a skilled outfit recycler – she’s also a handy accessories up/down-grader, too. She put a slightly more low-key twist on this statement dress as the day wore on by changing into a pair of black pumps and swapping out the angular bag for one of her go-to Anya Hindmarches. - PA Photos
The Occasion: An evening event for Canada Day as part of the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A purple drape-front dress by Issa with a diamond-studded maple leaf brooch borrowed from the Queen, Anya Hindmarch’s Maud clutch and Prada pumps
The Buzz: On a day of epic outfit changes, Kate slipped into this slinky Issa cocktail number as she and her husband joined 100,000 people on Ottowa’s Parliament Hill to watch acts from across the country into the night. It’s little wonder that the Duchess opted for a cool jersey piece with her hair swept into a chic chignon; earlier in the day she had told Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s wife Laureen: “I’m just so hot. It’s incredible,” as an onlooker fainted.

The Occasion: Celebrating Canada Day during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Reiss’ cream Nanette dress, a maple leaf hat by Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co, Anya Hindmarch’s fan clutch and a pair of red court shoes by Albini
The Buzz: It’s that dress! The engagement portrait dress! Kate caused a fashion frenzy when she recycled probably the most high-profile piece in her wardrobe (wedding dress aside): Reiss’ Nanette dress. And she didn’t re-wear it any old way, but on another high profile day, on a high profile tour, paired with a hat with a giant maple leaf on it. This is the stuff fashion history is made of. - Rex Features
The Occasion: Arriving in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Joseph’s Vanessa dress, a signature tweed Chanel jacket and LK Bennett’s Natalie clutch
The Buzz: Now, that’s what you call making an entrance! Kate changed into this fresh and feminine look for touchdown in Charlottetown, toting the LK Bennett clutch bag she carried at Epsom races earlier in the year – and which had been sold out ever since. Kate reportedly told a little girl awaiting her arrival that the jacket was Chanel, or we probably wouldn’t have placed it, though it’s a very ‘Kate’ style. - PA Photos
The Occasion: A barbecue honouring young volunteers during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A navy Issa bird print
The Buzz: Spot the birdy? You’d be right – this is the very same bird print dress by Issa that Kate wore the day before she married her prince. - Rex Features
The Occasion: A tour of Quebec during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Erdem’s blue lace Jacquenta dress
The Buzz: This one had everyone rubbing their eyes. Hadn’t Kate worn a blue lace dress by Canadian-born, London-based designer Erdem already on this trip?

The Occasion: Arriving in Ottowa during the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: Erdem’s blue lace Cecile dress
The Buzz: Yep – it’s a blue lace dress by Canadian-born, London-based designer Erdem! Like Kate, we’re of the school of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The Duchess obviously feels comfortable and stylish in cut, so we didn’t blame her one bit for packing two spookily similar pieces in her suitcase (we’re just a little bit jealous, because we’d be happy with one). - PA Photos
The Occasion: Boarding a plane at Heathrow to embark on the royal tour of Canada
The Outfit: A navy dress by Roland Mouret, wool-crepe blazer by Smythe and Mulberry’s £850 navy blue leather Polly Push-lock bag
The Buzz: It’s easy to forget that Kate’s actually working on the occasions she’s photographed, so easy and chic is her everyday style. We fear, however, that she misjudged the balance on this occasion – her formal navy ensemble was less private jet, more flight attendant. Still, we were thrilled to see her toting a Mulberry bag. Best of British, and all that. Plus, she changed before she landed... - PA Photos
The Occasion: A trip to Wimbledon
The Outfit: A pleated white £795 sun dress by Temperley London
The Buzz: The being pretty much as close as possible to a tennis dress as you’re going to pluck from a designer rail, Kate did her best to look like ‘one of the gang’ at Wimbledon the day before she and Prince William embarked on their royal tour of Canada. She giggled as her husband joined in with a Mexican wave, and received a lavish bow from Andy Murray as the Scot triumphed in straight sets against Frenchman Richard Gasquet on centre court. The dress, which had previously been reduced to half price in the designer’s summer sale, disappeared from its website within 30 minutes of Kate being spotted in it. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Marking Armed Forces Day at Victoria Barracks in Windsor
The Outfit: A double-breasted navy overcoat by Alexander McQueen with a ribbon-embellished hat by Rachel Trevor-Morgan Millinery
The Buzz: This one speaks for itself. A military engagement obviously calls for a military-inspired look – and, since this one is by Alexander McQueen, it was a no-brainer for our sartorially confident Duchess. Observers noted that she struck the perfect note between stylishness and seriousness.

The Occasion: The Garter Day celebrations at Windsor Castle
The Outfit: A Philip Treacy head-piece with a light grey dress and matching coat by Katherine Hooker
The Buzz: It’d be fair to say that this outfit flew below the radar somewhat. Kate may love a good fitted silk dress coat, but it’s probably never going to catch on. We’ll mark this one ‘satisfactory’. - PA Photos
The Occasion: The wedding of close friend Sam Waley-Cohen
The Outfit: An unidentified silk monochrome dress with a Philip Treacy fascinator
The Buzz: We first spotted Kate in this dress way back in 2007, on a night out with sister Pippa during the brief period of separation between her and Wills. Interestingly, jockey friend Sam Waley-Cohen is the one oft-credited with getting the royal couple back on track. On another note, this is the same headpiece that Queen Sonja of Norway wore to Kate’s wedding – she was obviously picking up style tips from her guests! - PA Photos
The Occasion: The Trooping Of The Colour
The Outfit: An Alexander McQueen white dress coat with the same Philip Treacy fascinator
The Buzz: Life as the Duchess of Cambridge isn’t all hair appointments and receiving flowers from cute kids, you know – like any young professional, Kate has a pretty packed schedule. Earlier that same day of the wedding, she attended her first Trooping Of The Colour, simply buttoning this architectural McQueen coat over her dress for a totally fresh look. A girl after our own hearts. - PA Photos
The Occasion: The annual ARK charity dinner
The Outfit: A Swarovski crystal-encrusted pink gown by Jenny Packham with LK Bennett’s Agata sandals and a pink Prada clutch
The Buzz: The first official, public engagement for the royal couple after their wedding, this was definitely an iconic affair. In the eyes of the world’s media, this Jenny Packham dress catapulted Kate from blushing bride to international superstar – a view helped along, no doubt, by the gown’s decidedly blingy £3,835 price tag. (Such is the power of Kate, it still sold out almost immediately.)

The Occasion: A day at Epsom races
The Outfit: A Reiss dress, Joseph jacket, Philip Treacy hat and shoes and a clutch from LK Bennett
The Buzz: A heady mix of high end and high street pieces, this was hailed as a style triumph for Kate, on what was her first race day as part of the royal family. Sadly, the Queen didn’t fare quite as well – her horse, Carlton House, trailed in third. - PA Photos
The Occasion: Meeting the Obamas at Buckingham Palace
The Outfit: Reiss’ £175 Shola dress and a satin clutch by Anya Hindmarch
The Buzz: Having laid low for a few weeks post-honeymoon, Kate was back on the scene with a bang thanks to a high profile meeting with Barack and Michelle Obama – in which she trounced the First Lady’s (admittedly impressive) designer style with this bandage-effect high street gem. Reportedly, 20 dresses were sold online within two minutes of Kate’s appearance and the trend was quickly dubbed ‘Sholamania’ in a repeat of the demand for Kate’s engagement portrait dress, which was also by Reiss. - PA Photos
The Occasion: The morning after the (wedding) night before
The Outfit: A £49.99 cornflower blue Zara dress, belted, with a black Ralph Lauren blazer and a pair of £129.99 LK Bennett wedge pumps
The Buzz: How to top two incredible designer dresses that have been the toast of the world? Don’t even try. Newly-wed Kate kept things real as she was pictured leaving Buckingham Palace to hop in a helicopter with her new husband and be whisked away on a mini-moon in a Zara dress and the LK Bennett wedges she also wore on the eve of the wedding. No matter, really – following sister Pippa’s starring bridesmaid role, the heat from the style spotlight was diffused somewhat... - PA Photos
The Occasion: That second dress, for her wedding day evening celebrations
The Outfit: A strapless white satin gown with diamante detailing around the waist by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, plus a white angora shrug
The Buzz: It’s her wedding day, and she’ll change if she wants too! Kate went for a simpler, softer, more romantic vibe with her reception dress than she did for the ceremony show-piece – although she stuck to what she knew, opting for another Burton/McQueen creation. In a display of matrimonial harmony, Prince William also ditched the military uniform her wore earlier in the day in favour of black tie.

The Occasion: Her actual wedding (sob!)
The Outfit: A lace appliqué-bodice gown with a 2m 70cm train by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, with a Cartier tiara borrowed from the Queen and earrings that were a gift from her parents
The Buzz: And so we’re back to where it all began – with that dress, the one fit for a princess. How time flies indeed.
